Cute girl names run in Busy Philipps family. Born Elizabeth Jean Philipps, the Cougar Town star quickly earned her own cute nickname, Busy, because she just couldn’t stop moving. Her own first daughter’s name is Birdie Leigh and now, baby #2 is Cricket Pearl. Cute, yes, but why?

Busy PhillipsPhilipps and screenwriter hubby, Marc Silverstein, didn’t have a name firmly in mind when their second daughter was born on July 3, 2013. They took their unnamed daughter home to meet her big sister, 5-year-old Birdie.

With many name ideas in mind, none of them seemed exactly right once the couple got to know their newest daughter as days went by. Says Phillips: “I looked at her and she just couldn’t be one of those names.”

After about a week, the family got a call from the hospital. It was time to attach an official name to the baby’s medical records.

The creative talents of the baby’s daddy came to the rescue. Here’s how Busy tells the story:

“A lot of times your name dictates the kind of personality you have and he’s like, ‘Everyone likes Cricket. Cricket is just the greatest, happiest kid on the block. The coolest camp counselor. She’s hot in college.’ He just had this whole narrative for what that name was.”

This was definitely a case of father knows best.

Mom describes the first month as “really tricky” as Birdie became familiar with her new baby sister. “I think she was expecting the baby to come out and be more interesting” but sister bonding got a bit more playful once baby Cricket started smiling and connecting with big sister Birdie.

Silverstein is the creative talent behind the romantic comedy, He’s Just Not That Into You, in which Philipps had a small role. Other screenwriting credits include Valentine’s Day and The Vow. In addition to writing, Silverstein is an actor, director, and producer.

Philipps’ first show biz “role” was real-life Barbie, working the crowds at toy fairs around the country. Film and television roles soon followed. Fans watched her transition from teen roles to adulthood, including her current role as Cougar Town’s Laurie Keller which she’s had since 2009.

If names really do dictate personality, Busy Philipps lives up to hers. Just one week after giving birth to Birdie in August 2008 (and gaining 80 pounds during her pregnancy), Philipps auditioned for the TV series Glee.
