What is a Nabothian Cyst?

Most people are relatively familiar with the term ovarian cysts, which is when a woman has cysts on her ovary but cysts can also grow on the cervix. These types of cysts are called nabothian cysts. If you have a nabothian cyst, you may be able to feel in on your cervix, but more than likely you may not notice it at all. It may feel like a bump. These are usually normal fluid-filled cysts that form on the cervix and they are rarely, if ever of concern. Cervical cysts usually are discovered incidentally while a woman examines herself or by the doctor during a pelvic exam. These cysts typically cause no symptoms and don't require treatment unless they grow large enough to cause pain. In such cases, treatment may include removal of the cyst.

If the cervical cyst has an unusual appearance or you have abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge, pelvic pain, or pain during intercourse, your doctor may perform a colposcopy. A colposcopy is a procedure in which your doctor inserts a speculum just as when taking a Pap smear but uses a special microscope to magnify the cervix. If the cyst appears abnormal during a colposcopy, your doctor may perform a biopsy to rule out cancer. If you notice any new or unusual lump or bump, it’s worth mentioning it your doctor on your regular visit, and if you are concerned schedule a visit sooner to get it checked out.
