Lydia Pinkham

Has anyone ever used Lydia Pinkham for irregular cycles? I saw some things online that said it helped. I may start taking this with vitex to see what happens. Ladies let me know your thoughts. Here is info on it from the net:

Nutritional Support to Help You Feel Better During Menstruation and Menopause

I have always had problems with my menstrual cycle. I had not seen my cycle since Oct 2005. My husband and I decided to go with a more natural approach to clear this issue, but had no idea as to what to try. We also are trying for our first baby, so something had to work for us. A college friend told me about Lady Pinckum Herbal Supplement. We discussed it and decided to give it a try. I would say about 2 1/2 -3 weeks after regular intake, my cycle came on. It also was alot less cramping and clotting. i am very pleased with this product so far. Keep your fingers crossed for a new little addition to our family.

I friend recommended to me for menopausal syntoms. I have depresion syntoms and was using Xanax. I after using this product I totally discontinue Xanax. It even regulated my menstrual periods and eliminated the menstrual cramps. I will recommend this products for mood swings. I feel calm and OK.

sorry for my hiatus...anywho...one post at soulcysters a lady mentioned using vitex from cd3-14 (or O)...only...ALso read somewhere that you could take a progesterone supplement 2 weeks, then estrogen one the next 2 weeks, like a 28 day cycle would...or maybe I have those number of weeks whacky, may have to look into it more.

RaeRae~
I always stop taking it when I O. It can cause the uterus to contract. You also want to let the progesterone in your body take over and the LP has the opposite effect. Some take it all cycle, but I always stop when I O. I've heard success stories both ways, for what its worth :)

Girls,

My LP was lengthened by 5 days on LP. Is this normal? Should I even be taking it post-O? I can't find info anywhere!

Alrighty girls,

I *think* I"m 15dpo..my LP is usually between 12-14. Anyone heard of lydia keeping AF from arriving? I"ve been taking the recommended doses since 4dpo. It did help ALOT with eliminating my endo back pain (yay) but i'm wondering if this is just going to keep AF from coming. I feel a tad bloated, boobies are definitely fuller and normal nipple tenderness, but that's it. I am not a POASer...any advice?

I wish you did, too!

My RE (and obgyn) has done tons of bloodwork. Everything has come back "normal" so the whole thing is sorta a mystery. I'm thinking about doing the tea the whole cycle (after my period...I've read that you shouldn't take vitex during menustration) and maybe just 1 or 2 lydia's until ovulation. I do produce follicles, they're just small and don't always burst out on their own. I"m not giving up hope for this cycle (or the next, if that is what it takes). And if I have to do the injectables, so be it! I'm just not looking forward to giving myself shots. When I did the hcg, dh had to do them for me.

Good luck! We'll figure this out :)

Oh, I understand exactly what you mean. We were told we couldn't conceive naturally because of my CM and the viscosity of his ejaculate. Well, last month it did happen, but it didn't implant.

My cycles have been pretty regular with a couple weird ones in there. Since coming off the pill in January: 28, 28, 28, 28 (I think my body was coming off the regularity of the pill), 27, 21, 33, 26, 29, 29, 38 (this one was the chem m/c).

I O around days 16-17 and my lp is good at 14 days. Last month I had some weird up and down temps, like I tried to O a couple times and just didn't have enough hormone to get it to burst through the corpus luteum. I'll attach my charts.

If I were you, I'd do some research on estrogen and progesterone. The lydia will mimic estrogen. The tea will mimic progesterone. You need to figure out (with your RE if necessary) which one or if it's both that you're having problems with. The vitex in the tea will regulate the pituitary gland which gets this whole process started.

Good luck! I wish I had the crystal ball for you..... :)

nikki,
If you feel comfortable posting this, how long are your cycles and about when do you ovulate?

I've been ovulating on my own for the last 5 months, but my RE is concerned about how late I ovulate (around day 20ish). My cycles are about 33-34 days, and my lutal phase is around 14 days. His concern is that since I ovulate so late, the egg is old (not to mention that I have small follies already when using fertility drugs) so that if I did get pg on my own, I could have a higher chance of miscarriage or genetic problems. I'm thinking about trying next month with just the tea, flaxseed oil and prenatals. The LP seems to make my temps a bit more steady, but they seemed to be much lower. Its so confusing! Wish I had a crystal ball to tell me what to do :) Its also hard to find any natural doctors where I live, so I feel like I read as much as I can, but still don't know what the right thing to do is. Sigh.

cincy,
I'm not going to do lydia at all. I'm not comfortable with the estrogen like affects it will have because of the Black Cohosh because my cycles are pretty regular and I do ovulate. I'm more interested in regulating my prosterone levels once ovulation occurs, so I'm just going to use the tea with the prenatals that I already have.

I found a fertile blend in a health food store that has some black cohosh in it, but not near as much as in the lydia. I'm just going to use this until my fertile tea shows up!

RaeRae~ I don't know about it lengthening your lp. It should regulate your cycle, so you should see a 14 day lp.....but I'm no expert by any means. Good luck.

Ladies,

Can LP lengthen your LP? Just wondering if I should expect a late AF this cycle or not. I started it 4 days into the 2ww.

thanks

Nikki,
Just wondering, are you doing the lydia and tea, or just the tea. I'm on my 2nd cycle of lydia and in the 2ww right now. If I'm not pg, I'm doing an hsg next cycle, and trying to decide if I should go with just the tea or do the tea and lydia. Just wondering what you (or anyone else) is doing. Hoping to get pg this cycle or next. If not, its off to the injectables, which I really don't want to do, but I will try anything at this point :)

Here is my story:
I was pregnant this month, but it didn't stick. This is the first month I came off of caffeine, came off of soy (has an estrogenic effect like Black Cohosh), and started green tea. My progesterone levels were waaaaaaay low and my lh was waaaaaay high all month.

I gotta tell you, for my own problems, the Vitex (chasteberry, Agnus Castus) is more what I need. It regulates lh and restores progesterone levels. I'm going to try the fertiletea this month since I did get pregnant last month and see if the Vitex helps sustain something.

I'm not saying the lydia is not good for some. For women who are having estrogen issues, it sounds like it should work (well it has!!!). My cycles are pretty regular even with endo and PCOS, but for those who cycles aren't regular, it sounds like this will help you.

Good Luck!

Nikki

Here's a bit about what the herbs do. I found this very helpful for me in making an informed decision about Lydia:

Agnus Castus (also referred to as vitex or chasteberry): This seems to be the herb most commonly used by women with PCOS. Vitex has a direct effect on the pituitary gland; the gland involved in regulating hormone production. It seems to increase the level of LH, although the studies that have shown this have been conducted in women without PCOS. Therefore, this does not mean it increases LH levels in women with PCOS. The fact that it works so well in women with PCOS lends great support to David Hoffman's (11) assertion that vitex is an adaptive herb that does whatever the body needs it to do. It seems to restore progesterone to a normal level , which is helpful for those with low progesterone levels. Low progesterone levels can cause miscarriage so vitex can help to prevent this. It is also used for irregular menstruation, amenorrhea and PMS.

Donq Quai: This is actually a Chinese herb but it is widely available in Western health food stores. It is one of the best women's herbs and has been dubbed "the female ginseng" (12). Similar to vitex, it can be used for long periods of time because it is a tonic herb. It nourishes the liver and endocrine system and is useful for irregular menstruation, PMS, period pain and menopausal symptoms. It is a phytoestrogenic herb.

Black Cohosh: Black cohosh is a uterine tonic herb and exhibits an oestrogenic effect. It is widely used in menopausal formulas but is valuable for treating amenorrhea, irregular menstruation and PMS. This herb can also lower blood pressure.

Saw Palmetto: Saw palmetto is traditionally used to treat male prostate enlargement. However, since it is an anti-androgen many women with PCOS use it to treat hirsutism and acne. It has a side effect of increasing breast size in some and consequently is used in breast enhancing herbal formulas to increase cup size. However, it does not always have this effect.

Evening Primrose: a widely popular supplement taken by many women for PMS, fibrocystic breast disease and to improve skin quality. It can also help with irregular cycles. It is rich in G.L.A and linolenic acid; essential fatty acids which the body requires to regulate hormones. Evening Primrose oil also helps with heart disease, cholesterol and blood pressure.

Progesterone cream: This cream has been widely popularised by Dr. John Lee, who advocates the use of this cream for many female conditions such as menopause, PMS, fibrocystic breast disease, ovarian cysts and PCOS. It can be ordered from various companies on the Internet.

My last five cycles have been on Clomid and I O'd CD18, CD20, CD22, CD38, then CD16. This is my first cycle off Clomid and I'm also taking Lydia Pinkham. I wonder if that could cause such an early ovulation.

What do you think about the possibility of having ovulated at CD7? I had ewcm and very bad ovary pains CD7 then a little ew and lighter O pains on CD8 but have had no more pain and creamy CM since then. What do you ladies think? Also, I have also had post-o smells to my CM too ... crazy I know but I have a certain smell that I have noticed over the past cycles that happens right after O.

Hi girls,

I"m new here but today I was chatting with someone from fertility friend who told me about LP. I"ve been TTC #1 for 3 yrs 3 months "officially" and have already had an HSG, Lap, 4 cycles of clomid + 1 IUI. We did get a faint BFP on our first cycle of clomid after my lap, but lost it. Been trying ever since naturally. Starting LP today..i'm cd20. Today I felt alot of backaches and dull cramps, but I also have mild endo and it could be that too.

well, i hope i become another miracle LP bfper!

Black cohosh and vitex are good for menopause (and pre-menopause). I think I'm with you on the whole never have hot flashes thing :) I'm going to use the tea (fertiltea or whatever it is called) b/c I'm hoping that the vitex will help me ovulate sooner (my cycles are 34 days and I usually ovulate around day 20) I really think that the LP has helped my hormones level and my period was so much lighter and I had very little cramping. I'm hoping a combination of the two (and the reflexology and fertility hypnosis) will do the trick. At this point, I'd run naked through the streets if I thought that would work :)

I think somewhere near the top of this thread Heather said not to take fertilaid w/LP...yep the 5th message from the top...that was my concern. I have taken plenty of things with vitex in them, but they never did anything for me...but I know black cohosh is an estrogen type thing and from what I understand gals w/pcos have too much estrogen...like hot flash may never be a problem here, yk...LOL

Here is an article on pcos and black cohosh. I haven't been diagnosed formally with pcos, but I have a couple of the symptoms. Vitex is also suppose to be good, too. I'm going to keep taking the LP and I also ordered the fertiltea (sp?) I think I have low progesterone, so I'm hoping the vitex helps with that.

Good luck to you :)

Good Morning!

I'm on my second cycle of the LP. My temps seem almost flat. I changed the battery in my bbt about 2 months ago, so I don't think the battery has anything to do with my temps. I've also been sick. Has anyone else had this problem/issue?

BabyIllusions: I don't know how LP affects pcos, but you might want to check out the book Fertility Foods if you haven't done so already. It was written by an RE and his wife. It helps out on the whole insulin resistence thing. The diet is similar to the Zone (balancing good carbs and protein.) He puts alot of his patients on it and they seem to have good success with getting pregnant naturally. Good luck to you.

Choosymom: Good luck with the clomid. I'm seeing my RE on Thursday. Hoping he will review my charts and tell me I don't have to go back onto the clomid. Keep us updated :)

Hope you ladies get the ++ soon for Thanksgiving blessings of praise!!

Morning!!

Today is only my second day taking Lydia. It seems to REALLY help during menstration. On CD2 I had so much cramping and then I started Lydia on CD3 and I haven't had anymore cramps. Also my flow lightened from my heavy CD2 to a Med/Light CD3 and almost nonexistat today (CD4) I'm only taking 3 pills in the morning with my pre-natal. I have a problem taking pills (gag reflex) and I almost can't take the three (plus my prenatal has one dose is two pills).

How is everyone else?

Chooosy ... no AF yet? How many DPO are you? I'm not the greatest chart reader.

I upped my dosage to the full 6 per day (2 at each meal) as per bottle directions...it does cause cramping, hmmm weird. I am going to an international adoption seminar today. Homestudy and cost hold me back from that option, but other than that find it a very good thing to adopt. No one has been able to tell me if Lydia's is ok for someone with pcos so....maybe black cohosh (estrogen precursor) is the wrong herb for me? haven't figured that out yet.

Well phooey...my RE is totally against anything herbal. And I already ordered a 2 month supply of it. My Follistim won't be until March or so so I think I will just try it for a couple months and if I notice a difference that will be my deciding point. I know I will definitely stop it the month prior to my IUI.

Thanks Marsha for the info!

According to this source black cohosh (the active ingredient in LP) can interact with follistim. Black cohosh contains phytoestrogens, plant chemicals which act like the hormone estrogen in the body.
http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/DVH/Uses/0,3915,550289%7CFollistim,00.html

I would discuss this with your doctor.

Okay I know I am new to this thread, I took a few LP right after my ovulation....maybe even day of ovulation for about 3/4 days then stopped because I was afraid what if I am preg. and I am pregnant. I am 41 years old with old eggs so not sure how it will go, but I have been trying since Feb 06, so 8 months of trying for me. BFP. I took baby aspirin, and extra folic acid this month too.
