smiling pregnant womanSome expectant mothers are so focused on their growing tummies that it takes someone else to point out that pregnancy glow that radiates from them during this important time of life. It’s more than joy and happiness that paints the picture of health on mothers-to-be. There are physiological reasons associated with pregnancy that naturally enhance a woman’s beauty. Use these tips from the experts to polish that gorgeous glow to perfection.

The Hair
Billie Crago, salon director at London’s Chapel Hair salon, says estrogen does great things for the hair during pregnancy. Estrogen extends the life cycle of each strand of hair so it looks like there’s more hair there. There isn’t actually more hair growing but less of it falling out, contributing to the look of lush, healthy locks. Drago suggests using a hydrating hair mask each week during pregnancy to make the most of the hair’s natural sheen as well as to relax and pamper mom.

The Skin
Thank progesterone for the rosy glow and dewy complexion so many women develop during pregnancy. An expectant woman’s increased blood volume pumps more blood to the surface of the skin, giving the face a radiant glow. Women are encouraged to enjoy plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated and healthy, pregnant or not.

The Smile
Dr. Uchenna Okoye, celebrity dentist for the United Kingdom, says 50 to 70 percent of expectant mothers in the UK experience gum problems during pregnancy, a situation that underlines the importance of optimum oral hygiene during pregnancy. Okoye, clinical director of London Smiling Dental Group and TV’s Channel 4 dental expert, encourages her pregnant patients to brush twice a day for at least two minutes each session. She recommends toothpaste in gum-protecting formulas for the healthiest mouth possible.

The Hands
The nails may suffer a bit during pregnancy as nutrients that keep them strong and healthy are diverted to the developing baby. Women may notice their fingernails growing softer or more brittle during pregnancy and they may develop tiny grooves at the base of the nail. Lavish use of moisturizer on the nail bed and around the nail will protect fragile fingernails during pregnancy and after, when diaper changing leads to frequent hand washing.

From head to toe, Crago says the magical glow of pregnancy becomes especially apparent during the second trimester, just when pampering and compliments do wonders to boost an expectant mom’s spirits.
