Massage-therapy-during-pregnancy

When you are pregnant or trying to conceive, it can be a stressful time. Prenatal massages are great for stress relief and relaxation. A person who is trained in prenatal massage will be able to tend to stiff and tense muscles and provide much needed relief.

How can massage therapy benefit you?

Prenatal massages can relieve backaches, headaches, edema, and other problems associated with pregnancy. Professionally trained physicians recognize all the benefits that are associated with prenatal massage therapy. During pregnancy, back pain is a very common symptom. Massage therapy can help to relieve the pain, and possibly prevent more episodes. Common complaints with the legs are edema cramps and swelling. Massage therapy can also promote restorative sleep and prevent insomnia.

Massage therapy during pregnancy can also benefit the baby as the massaging of the abdomen can help the baby to relax. This could cause the contraction to be more intense and productive during labor and delivery.

Make sure to consult with a qualified professional

It is important when considering prenatal massage therapy, to only consult massage therapists who are qualified professionals. It is important for them to be specially trained to treat pregnant women. There are many pressure points on the body, some of which could possibly trigger a contraction. After about 18 weeks, it is not recommended to lie on the back for an extended period of time. Since a session could last an hour, most massage therapists will ask you to lie on your side.

Some massage therapists choose to use aromatherapy oils during massage treatments. Several oils are known to be safe for use during prenatal treatments, with others being non-advisable. Most women will not use oils because of the scents for at least the first three months of pregnancy. If the fragrance is bothersome, the therapist will understand. For a list of safe to use aromatherapy oils, contact your massage therapist or physician.

Remember

For the most part, a trained massage therapist will know the entire list of dos and don'ts for a very pleasurable experience. There should be no pain as the session should be relaxing and refreshing.
