Between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, your doctor may give you a glucose challenge screening test which involves drinking a sugary liquid and having blood drawn a few times to test the body's reaction to high levels of sugar. Women that are diagnosed with gestational diabetes are able to have healthy babies but they will need to closely monitor glucose levels throughout the rest of their pregnancy and switch to a low-carb diet.

Tips for this week

Some women may experience abdominal cramping, lower back pain and irregular contractions about 2-3 times per day. These contractions, known as Braxton Hicks contractions are the body's way of getting the uterus ready for birth. However, if contractions grow stronger and closer together, you need to see your doctor immediately as this is not typical of Braxton Hicks contractions and may mean there is a problem. Preterm labor is common during the 24th week and may start with a vaginal infection.
