What are Neutrophils?
Neutrophils are white blood cells. The main function of neutrophils is to fight off fungal or bacterial infections. When large numbers of neutrophils die pus is formed. Pus is a common symptom of infection.
There are five white blood cells in all (the other four are basophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes). Neutrophil levels will appear abnormal on the WBC (white blood cell) count test if there is a condition of any kind affecting the immune system. However, certain conditions cause neutropenia, an unusually low number of neutrophils, and there are multiple types of neutropenia:
- Febrile
- Cyclical
- Congenital
- Drug-Induced
- Chronic
Normal Value Range
- Negative Pregnancy Adult: 1.4 to 4.6X103/mm3X103/µl or 1.4 to 4.6X109/L
- Pregnancy Trimester One: 3.6 to 10.1X103/mm3X103/µl or 3.6 to 10.1X109/L
- Pregnancy Trimester Two: 3.8 to 12.3X103/mm3X103/µl or 3.8 to 12.3X109/L
- Pregnancy Trimester Three: 3.9 to 13.1X103/mm3X103/µl or 3.9 to 13.1X109/L
