There are several ultrasound markers for Down syndrome which can be seen on sonogram during pregnancy and which can possibly indicate an increased risk for the fetus having Down syndrome.

There are several ultrasound markers for Down syndrome which can be seen on sonogram during pregnancy and which can possibly indicate an increased risk for the fetus having Down syndrome.

Down syndrome is a gentic conditions associated with an extra #21 chromosome. Another works for Down syndrome is also "Trisomy 21".

There are several ultrasound markers which can be seen on sonogram during pregnancy and which can possibly indicate an increased risk for the fetus having Down syndrome.

These ultrasound markers include the following.

  1. Echogenic bowel:
  2. Choroid plexus cysts
  3. Structural anomalies (inc. cardiac)
  4. Hypoplastic / absent midphalanx 5th Digit
  5. Short femur
  6. Wide space 1st-2nd toes
  7. Short humerus
  8. 2-vessel umbilical cord
  9. Pyelectasis
  10. Echogenic cardiac foci
  11. Nuchal fold thickening >= 6 mm

A fetus which has one or more of these markers should be evaluated further and additional tests like an amniocentesis can be doe to see if the fetus has Down syndrome.
