Dr. Rodrigo Ayala

Ob-Gyn, Professor, Researcher

Dr. Rodrigo Ayala is an Ob-Gyn specializing in maternal-fetal medicine and gynecological endoscopic surgery. He is currently Chief Professor of the Ob-Gyn Residency Program at ABC Medical Center in Mexico City, has published in over 50 medical journals worldwide, and initiated research protocols in advanced genetic testing, laparoscopic surgery, and gestational diabetes.

Medical Training

Dr. Ayala has trained both in his native Mexico City as well as the United States and gained experience from both cultures at a very young age. In Mexico, he attended medical school at the Universidad Anáhuac, graduating with honors and immediately initiated his specialty in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the National Institute of Perinatology in Mexico City. He embarked on further training in Portland Oregon at the Oregon Health and Science University in various fields of Reproductive Endocrinology and Molecular biology.

Developed Prenatal Research Services

Dr. Ayala moved back to Mexico City in 2007 where he trained as a laparoscopy surgeon and went on to become an attending physician in gynecology, obstetrics, and advanced laparoscopy. In 2010, he was appointed Academic Coordinator for Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 2011, he became the Sub-Director of Education, and in that same year, he was appointed Director of Education of the entire Institution.

In 2015, he started working as Director of the Asociación Hispano Mexicana Foundation, which has been working for decades to develop different protocols to provide prenatal care and safe delivery for women in the Iztapalapa area (a highly dense, low-income population in Mexico City).  Dr. Ayala has reactivated many of the research protocols at the institution and has introduced new services that were not available previously in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, such as advanced genetic testing, laparoscopic surgery, and LDRs among others. Presently, the institution has various research protocols in gestational diabetes, hypothyroidism, neonate nutrition, and neurodevelopment as well as an advanced course for nurses pursuing further training as midwives. Dr. Ayala still holds this position and has initiated new projects to establish international links with this Institution.

In 2007, Dr. Ayala also started working at the ABC Medical Center IAP in Mexico City, initiating his private practice and getting involved in the hospital’s academic program where he was appointed Head Professor of the Obstetrics and Gynecology program, a position he holds today. Dr. Ayala is involved with various associations and organizations such as ACOG, Endocrine Society, AAGL, WAPM, Ian Donald International School of Ultrasonography, COMEGO (Mexico), and IAPM.

Education Is Key

Dr. Ayala considers education as the key factor for major progress in Mexican medical attention, where various techniques and concepts used worldwide need to be evaluated and adapted to the Mexican reality. Dr. Ayala feels that Mexico needs to perform research on its’ own population and attend to the problems seen on a daily basis like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and teenage pregnancy.

Personally Speaking

Dr. Ayala enjoys spending weekends outdoors with his family, loves to travel both to the U.S and Europe, and yet he says “still nothing beats a nice vacation at the beach”. He is a big movie fan and always finds the time, at least once a week, to sit down with his wife and two children to watch the latest films.
