A recent study has claimed that lifestyle changes do not improve male fertility. Men, it seems, can eat what they want and drink what they want without fear it will impede fertility chances. However, I’m not a firm believer that men are off the hook in terms of overall health and sperm quality/quantity. Strong, healthy men of a normal weight who eat healthy foods and drink only moderate amounts of alcohol have to be healthier than men on the opposite end of the spectrum. While researchers may not be convinced there is a connection between healthy lifestyle choices and fertility, I believe you might as well make the changes even if the only outcome is a longer life you can share with the children you are trying to conceive. One of the simplest changes you can make is to add superfruits to your diet. According to one study, the antioxidants found in superfruits could improve male fertility.
What is an Antioxidant?
Oxidants are created during normal cellular function. They are also called free radicals and the body is equipped to handle normal amounts of these oxidants. However, our world is changing and some of the changes are causing increased production of free radicals in the human body. When the body is overwhelmed with too many free radicals, cellular death occurs. Cellular death can lead to increased signs of aging and poor health.
What are the Best Sources of Antioxidant?
The human body actually makes antioxidants to fight off free radicals, but you can also consume them via food. ORAC is the number used to measure antioxidant strength. Look for fruits with the highest ORAC number and add those to your daily meals. Some of the most popular superfruits are acai berry and blueberry. Green tea is another strong antioxidant that doubles as a metabolism booster and overall health booster.
