menstrual period, ovulation, stress, irregular menstrual period, menstrual cycle

Q: I've been so stressed out and my period has been late for the past few months. I keep thinking there must be a correlation, but I'm not sure. Can stress delay my period?

A: Stress in and by itself does not delay one's menstrual period but it can delay ovulation. Once ovulation has occurred, your day of menstruation is predetermined about 12-16 days later. Unless you are pregnant and have ovulated, your period is unlikely to get delayed because of stress.
