Is there an increased risk of birth defects?

The increased risk is probably due to abnormal division of the egg, called nondisjunction. Approximately 1 in 1,400 babies born from women in their 20's have Down syndrome; about 1 in 350 babies of women at 35 and 1 in 100 babies babies from women at 40 have Down syndrome.
