Chances are you will know when your water breaks because it will happen in the hospital. Some estimates claim that around 75% of women don't have the Hollywood experience of their water breaking in the middle of dinner with close friends. Typically, water (or the amniotic sac) breaks during labor when the cervix is at 8 to 9 cm.

If you do think you're one of the select few whose water breaks outside of the hospital, don't panic. You can call your doctor or perform a little rest test to see if it actually was your amniotic sac or something else. Change your underwear and put a sanitary napkin in place. Lay down for about 30 to 45 minutes and try to relax. The amniotic fluid will collect in the vagina. When you stand up after your rest, go to the bathroom and check the pad. If the pad is wet and smells a bit like bleach, you may want to give your doctor a call as it could be time to deliver.
