Q: Are premature contractions a problem?

A: Premature contractions can lead to labor and premature delivery, and if the baby is delivered too early there can be problems.
In general, having a long, closed cervix is the most reassuring sign that the contractions have no effect, but you want to be sure they don't eventually lead to full-blown labor.
In addition to having a pelvic examination, you may want to ask your doctor if you should have a fetal monitoring test done. This test is also known as 'non-stress test' and can objectively look at whether there are regular contractions or not.
